4.56 Gears installed
I've just got a used D44 installed and i would like to replace the 3.73 gears with some 4.56.
Any one know a good place to go to get it done?
I know about 4 wheel parts but i was hoping there might be a cheaper place.

Re: 4.56 Gears installed
John at atomic 4x4 quoted me $1500-1800. I don't have any replies from the other places yet other than JK who told me that he made it to AZ.
So, two last things to decide before I get it done.
I have a Reverse Dana 30 from a junk yard 5 years ago floating around the garage somewhere. I know that they are "stronger" than a standard D30 but are they "significantly" stronger to justify the time and money to get it working? It's a 96 XJ HP and will need new everything.
Is there a cheap soft locker out there that is better than the stock soft locker but worth the upgrade with out affecting its street manners? John suggested the spartan locker but I've never heard of it. It's got a few good reviews on Pirate 4X4.

Re: 4.56 Gears installed
id just stick with your current D30 and toss in some 27 spline chromos and an aussie locker. unless you are planning on running something bigger than 35" tires

Re: 4.56 Gears installed
that sounds pretty high to me.......
if you brought it to me.....at the dealership i work at...... id do it for around 800 in labor.
which would leave you 1000 to spend on parts to match the high side of that quote. now this is at a dealership.....a ford dealer
..... but im sure ive done as many jeep gearsets as anyone. so theres your quote.
if i was to do it on the side.......i wouldnt do it for much less. that and i have too many projects going on as is. so it would be a while.
now the nice thing about doing your own work is i think the last 1 ton swap i did cost the gf about 1400 bucks....axles, gears and all

Re: 4.56 Gears installed
Call Krawltex during reg. business hours. No way in hell anyone should pay $1800 to have a used set of gears installed in 1 axle.
I'd guess somewhere between $400-600 depending on the installation kit you need.

I believe you could buy new axles with gears and lockers and chromos and all for less than $1800.
I would call Cam over at Krawl Tex as well. Those guys do fantastic work and they are not goobers. 512-996-9669 is their number.

Obvious? He stated in the first post he picked up a D44 and needed gears installed. Guess I gotta read between the lines..
If you're talking 2 axles, there's alot of variables, new gears, mini or master install kits that can make the cost vary greatly. If you're talking labor only I'd think somewhere between $700-900 would be reasonable for both at a shop.

Re: 4.56 Gears installed
i figured it was obvious because no one in their right mind would pay 800 bucks labor to have one axle done. now if someone really wants to pay that much for one axle

Re: 4.56 Gears installed
So I got the Gears done. Cameron over a Krawltex took care of everything.
I got Yukon gears with an Auburn limited slip in the D44. I really like the road manners of the Auburn. Cant feel it most of the time but for a little ticking when parking. I left the D30 open for now as I'm leaving room for an upgrade for later when I have more money.
He did me a deal on the labor as I'm military.
I liked their shop and they guys up there are great. I really like seeing people who work together hanging out together after hours. Shows a lot for the work conditions and the boss. Plus you can show up after work hours and there is someone to talk to.
I'm just grinning from ear to ear every time I take off from a light now as it doesn't want to stall any more. Makes me wish I had done it years ago. The speedo gear is on the way so I can tell how fast I'm going.
Can't wait to go out and get it dirty.
