Wanted: Knowledge

Post by "Deuce" on Sun Nov 22, 2009 11:14 pm

Anyone know of a good place to buy 3/16" plate?? Preferably in the 4' by 8' variety.

I think 3/16" would be good for bumpers and skids. Figure on 2 sheets, one for the front bumper, and one for assorted skids and shit.....seeing as the gas tank skid is $240, and nobody makes a nose skid for mine, so I'd have to incorporate that into the front bumper.

I saw a pretty cool idea for a rear bumper today, so same question'll apply to 2" by 6" box as well.

SSS steel and supply. San Antonio. Best prices hands down. Maybe not worth the trip for you but if you get some dudes together and get $500 worth they will ship for free.

a 4x8 is gonna run you about 75 bucks.

also, there is a difference between plate and sheet. Plate is a less malable steel.

In the Austin area Metals for U has decent prices. That would be who I would go with.

I just got all my steel there.

"belton pipe" is great for their prices.
254-939-5581

1/8" 4x8 is 70.00 $
1/4" 4x8 is 114.00
3/16" was something like 80 or 90.00

they were from $40.00 to 80.00 cheaper than all the other places I called around temple/killeen...per sheet.

These were prices I was quoted a week ago.

thats why it's always better to buy a 4x8 sheet and fab as much as you can cause you can potentialy save hundred or thousands from not having to buy skid-plates/tabs/brackets/and certain bumpers. plus you get knowledge from experience + welding. Laughing

Is 1/16" really that huge of a deal? I would simply buy what is cheaper, but different storkes for different folks.

no not really, just workability. i go for the cheaper too. But 1/4 is a lil more than an angle grinder can handle. Not to say it cant be done.

Thanks, guys. I actually may have stumbled across something that's gonna save me buying one of those sheets.......but IDK yet, so I'll keep quiet.

So who are our master fabricators in the area then? I've got a hobart handler 130 that I'm still learning how to use but have no means of doing cutting or HD welding.

They're all over the place, man. Dominicker built a lot of stuff, Jeremy (xjjs90) is (still??) in the process of building a SIIIIIIIIICK exo for his XJ, zukidave DEFINITELY knows his shit, makanic9, Digger, and BHAM have mad skills as well. I can envision shit, I just can't do CAD to put it on paper, but I can do a pretty good job of drawing it out.

Once again, I don't want anyone getting mad because I didn't mention ya, those are just the first names that popped into my head.
