Roll Cage Q's

Post  Highjaxx on Sat Feb 13, 2010 2:14 pm

Thinking about the roll cage as the next upgrade to the Jeep, I know that the front A-pillars and dash/windshield spreader bars will be added/upgraded. My real question is regarding the choice between simply adding to the original roll cage, or doing a full replacement cage. The rig gets used for light to medium crawling and trail riding. No 40MPH jumps in my future. I thought I remembered hearing that if you take a hard roll you should probably replace the entire cage anyway for safety. So should I just add the half-cage to the existing cage and wait to replace it later? Can I later replace the original bars if I decided I want a full cages safety later, or would I have to scrap the cage and start over? I've been looking a poison spiders cages, but shipping all that steel from Cali might not be worth it since I'm going to have to take it to Krawltex or one of you guys house to have it installed anyway. On that note, anyone a serious tube badass that's interested in making me a rollcage? I'm obviously trying to keep costs down, but realize nothing in free. Any insite is welcome.

Kinda looking at these...or having it custom made.

I'm also open to other brands, just examples, and they are sponsoring vendors on here.

for what your into....add on to the stock cage. anything in front of the b pillar is junk. from the b pillar back they are ok. it would help a lot if it was tied to the frame especially at the rear of the tub. and the a pillar. it will make the whole cage a lot stronger. ive been upside down and on the side in my cage that was just added to. and had no damage at all. well to the cage at least. if you need a bit of proof about the stock tj cage with some added to it ask AK about it. in juggy version2.0 or 3.0.....i dunno. it was the 2nd hardest roll i had seen . http://krawltex.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=4967 in fact, with a better design that cage would have held up better. but for what it was......and what it went through it did the job.

regardless of what kind of wheeling your going to do, a good cage couldnt hurt. you just never know whats around the corner.

That's good to hear, that will help keep costs down, and this begs the next question, should I buy a A-pillar kit and a bunch of tube and bring Big Bill some beers while he's still eager to weld something. Or should I get an entire kit to simplify things. I don't have any real experience with this sort of thing. I know there is DOM tube and another(i forget). I know that a bunch of you guys are trying to get your buggies back together and don't have time to be messing with adding a couple bars to my "EXTREME" jeep.

I just hate hearing later "Oh man, you should have come over and we could have built that at my place..."

I'm not in any real hurry to get this done asap, just doing my research, and obviously the less expensive it is, the faster it can happen.

1.75" .120" wall dom runs about 4 bucks or more a foot locally. and its what id recomend for a cage. that being said, you dont HAVE to use dom. there are other options out there for less coin. as with anything you get what you pay for. the dom bends nice, welds great and usually comes rust free. other forms of tube should probably work fine for a trail cage and will definately be better than nothing.

there was some stuff i puchased once.....i think it was rejected dom mystery tube.....it was in the neighborhood of .120 wall. it worked ok in the bender up to 90 degrees and seemed to hold up pretty good. it just took a ton of cleanup to make it look ok. i got it for 1 dollar a foot. built sliders out of it and it seemed to hold up just as good as dom. but some of it from the same pile bent very easily like it was a totally different material.

$4 a foot, hell that's not much more than heater hose.

OK, shameless proposition time. Looking for someone to fab and install extra bars into my jeep so I don't squish my head.

I'll obviously provide the tube, A-pillar bars, and any other needed materials, along with beer and knee pads. I'm a decent shop apprentice and can do most tasks with some direction. Just can't do the welding and would not be wise for me to do the bending. Can even compensate you for your time and tools(welding materials ect.). Let me know when a good time is for you and I'll do my damnedest to be there.

Gimme a call if you have any interest (512)-422-6639 Aaron

Maybe I should throw in a midget hooker, that seems to get a lot of interest on here.

Ya thanks I was having a brain fart about the "4wd" part. I think he did move, but maybe I'm wrong, I thought you used to turn at the Hutto HS to get there, but that was before the toll road went out there. I'll give him a call Monday. Thanks

having had my share of cages, i think, having it well built is more important than the material. Im not saying Chip Foose could make a strong cage out of twigs, but with proper triangulation and bracing, and quality welding, any aftermarket cage is a good idea. The cage in our Yj is a kit for a Tj. It used to be in Tonys Yj and took a hellova beating. You can inspect it at Canyons. We took it out of tonys, and bolted it right into the wifes jeep. The bolt holes even lined up. DOM is best.....some say, but a nice 1.75" new piece of pipe would work IMHO. I wouldnt go 60mph across the desert with it.

Krawltex is going to add a "trailcage" to my existing stuff for a little more than what it would cost to buy and ship a kit. Since this will take care of all the labor of installing it ect. that should work out perfect. Thanks for everyone's info on the subject. This is definitely one area you wanna get right.

I think you made a great decision, the guys at Krawl TEX do A+ work. They built my cage and it looks amazing and is strong as shit.

As soon as I get done destroying these, or when I can afford a 4" lift so I can get some 35's. Then I'll be trying to sell these 265's to one of you guys to use on your pick-up truck.

And ya, don't worry I have a bunch of "stock" pics of the jeep so I can look back later and laugh.
