Re: $1000!!!
Ok, what do you mean by tap your steering box? Also, what could be done with the steering to overcome the locker situation then? There is so much that can be done but really what should be first then? I could use a winch. Has anybody ever used or heard anything about those Chicago ones at Harbor Freight? I know that they are cheap but will it work? Is it hard to regear, with the electric lockers on the Rubi? Or is that something I should take to a shop to have done?

Re: $1000!!!
Im a firm believer in, if you arnt confident, take it to the shop. There are alot of unseen things like psi, rpms, that could really get someone hurt, or damage some property.
Remember why you have a whinch, to get you out of a spot that sucks ass. Do as you like, and theres prolly some fucktard that will swear by one of those off brand ones, but 400 bones on a decent one aint a bad investment. I got buds with tires that 1 costs more than that. I have a Smittybuilt, but i can give no review, ive never used it.
Tapping the steer box? There are specific places on a saginaw box that you can drill and "tap" (drill and cut threads) a hydrolic fitting into a port that has preasure that can operate a hydrolic cylinder mounted to the front axle aiding in the steer operation, thus giving you what we call Hydro Assist.
As far as first goes, i chose to BREAK. That way i had my 1000 when needed it.
my daughter thinks this lil guy is cute.

Re: $1000!!!
The hydo assist will help with turning when locked. Also, since you have selectable lockers, you should try to unlock the front when turning or driving to the next obsticle.
I'm not sure about the hydro assist steering, but full hydro steering cannot be ran on the street. Maybe scourge can chime in about running hydro assist on the street.

from what I have read, you need to be able to turn your tires with the engine is off, depending on the orbital on your full hydro you can do this. Not saying its the best, if you have a leak somewhere you will not be able to turn them. I run full on my rig, but it rarely sees the street, if you drive it more the just a couple miles on the street you should just go hydro assist. And it is perfectly street legal.

thats what i heard. Dont bother with a locker if you got a rubi with a factory one, for 1000 bucks you can solve all your steering issues with a sweet kit from PSC. Factory taped box, blingy res, sweet ram. Aside from shaft upgrades, much more is gonna get you really involved, and its gonna be more than a grand.

he said it was hard to turn
and he said everything from mild to wildif he was smart he would just turn the locker off when he needs to turn.
If I was him I would use the money on entry fees to go wheeling so he can find out what HE needs not what EVERYONE else thinks they would do with HIS money. It takes alot of hours in the rig to get it all dialed in and what you like most likely wont be what all the xj owners around here like.

Re: $1000!!!
I've wheeled w/ a mess of rubicons w/ tires up to 37", non of them had hydro assist or full hydro that I know of. When you're locked up, it's supposed to be difficult to turn, just the way it is. Like was said, unlock the front if it's too bound up. I'm running 39.5's and am running just the factory steering box. Sure there are times I'd like to have a little help, but it hasn't precluded me from doing any trails so far, you just learn to work around it.
Once you add on assist or full hydro you will compromise the streetability and steering feedback to some extent.
What a bunch of

Re: $1000!!!
I want the motor to be stock so it is more dependable. As for the 33", I roll on 35"x12.5" on 15" Pro Comps XMT, I do have armor and a Full cage already. What I really want advice on is just some ideas that others have done to their rigs, I should have made that clear in the beginning. As for the turning part, yes I sometimes forget to turn off the front locker between obstacles. I will try to remember that. Thank you very much. I have thought of a power assist for the steering, but I do drive it daily and have seen problems with them. I wonder if I should take the money and get a winch, or axles? Now, for the money, a person can get axles and tie rods, and ball joints from AutoZone and have a lifetime warranty, and buy two sets and still come out cheaper then the chomos. Is that being a wiser spender or just what? I would really like your all opinion sense ya have been doing this longer then me. I do have some "sponsors" now. I can talk a good game. they don't pay for everything, but I do get free stuff from time to time from them.

Chromo shafts come with a warranty also. Less likely to break and you can use your stockers as spares. If you go hi steer, you'll get stronger knuckles. Change out the stock u joints with some super beefy ones and be done.

I would look at a WARN 8K winch. All the pull you need for wheeling and way less money. And Warn is a great company with great product.

Ok, I showd up late to this party, sorry if I over lap on some of this! Get over it!
What is the current form your TJ is in? Axles, T-case? Skids? Tires? What do you have?
Then we run down the list of what you REALLY need?
I HATE BLING! (I have shinny wheels right now. I'm so ashamed!
)
If it won't help you climb that rock, or ford that mud, or get you home, you don't need it!
I don't know you. You don't know me, but I do know I can help you spend your money!!
I'm out of work right now, and bored! That is good for you! I'm an engineer with a welder and some cut-off wheels, and I know how to use them!
If you buy the steel and bring it to me, I will burn that shit in to a shape and call it skids, if that is what you need.(bring a thank you in form of COLD PBR)!
point is I need more info to give you a good answer!

Ok that would be good to have. Also the hookers would be great to take on trips. I bet I could make my money back on that investment. Imagine going wheeling all day then gettin g back to camp and having the stress sucked out of you. Man, that would be great.

Ok, Im goin g to order the superwinch. Should I spring for the synthetic cable for it, or just get the wire cable. That will eat more of the money, but it would be better and lighter.

I have Masterpull Superline. http://www.masterpull.com/item.cfm?itemid=46478 Its nice when you have to drag it out because its lightweight. Plus there is the safety factor. Downside is that you have to be careful not to snag it on rocks... and the sun will kill it over time so you need to cover it when its not in use. Not to mention its also damn $$.

You have not been on the end of a winch pull with steel cable, when it broke; have you???????
Synthetic just falls to the ground! It's a safety issue.
That makes it worth every penny!!!
